In this video, I’m here to share a transformative practice that has the power to shape not only your day but your entire life and it is, YOUR intention.
Intentions are not just passing thoughts—they are purposeful seeds we plant to guide our actions and shape our reality. In this video, we’ll look into why intention-setting is so powerful, how it aligns with Ayurveda and holistic well-being, and how you can use it to bring clarity, peace, and fulfilment into your life. Stay with me to discover how this practice can truly transform the way you live.
What Is Intention?
Let’s start with a simple question: what exactly is intention? At its core, intention is a focused commitment to a purpose, backed by clarity and emotion. Unlike goals, which are specific outcomes we aim for, intentions are about the energy and mindset we bring into each moment.
From an Ayurveda perspective, intentions are deeply personal and align with one’s understanding of oneself, ‘Prakruti,’ or natural constitution. Intentions act as a bridge between one’s daily actions and one’s higher self, creating a sense of purpose and alignment.
Think of intention as the GPS for your life. Without it, you might find yourself travelling through life, but not always with clarity and may be feeli, and may feel. But with a clear intention, every step, every choice, naturally aligns with your desired destination.
Take a moment to reflect: What does intention mean to you? How often do you stop to consciously set one?
Why Intention Matters
Now that we know what intention is, let’s explore why it matters so much. When you set an intention, you’re not just deciding what you want to do, you’re activating the power of your mind, body, and Spirit to work together in harmony.
Even science supports this practice. Studies have shown that people who set clear intentions are more likely to achieve their goals, experience reduced stress, and feel greater satisfaction in life.
In Ayurveda, this principle relates to something called ‘Ritam,’ or cosmic order. Intentions are seen as subtle vibrations we send into the universe, attracting similar energies back to us. It’s like planting a seed in fertile soil: The care and clarity you invest in your intention will determine its growth and fruit.
Here’s a practical tip,
Start each day by setting a simple, positive intention. It could be as straightforward as ‘I will approach challenges with calmness today’ or ‘I will nurture my body with mindful choices.’ Notice how this small act changes your perspective throughout the day.
How to Set Powerful Intentions
Setting an intention is simple, but like any practice, it becomes more powerful with clarity and consistency. Here’s my step-by-step guide to help you set intentions that truly resonate:
1. Pause and Connect: Begin by spending a few moments in silence. Take a deep breath and tune into your inner state. Ask yourself, ‘What do I need most today?’
2. Be Specific: Avoid vague intentions. Instead of saying, ‘I want to be happier,’ try ‘I will bring joy into my day by appreciating small moments of beauty.’
3. Visualise: Close your eyes, : and imagine yourself living out your intention. Feel the emotions tied to this vision: peace, gratitude:, and confidence
4. Anchor It Write your intention down or say it out loud. Keep it somewhere visible: a sticky note on your mirror, your phone wallpaper, or a journal. Revisit it throughout the day to stay aligned.
Remember, intentions are not about perfection; they’re about presence. Each time you set an intention, you’re creating a new opportunity for alignment and growth.
Let me share a couple of stories to illustrate the transformative power of intentions.
One of my students, a busy professional, felt overwhelmed by her career’s demands. She began each morning by setting the intention, ‘I choose calm over chaos.’ This single sentence became her anchor. Over time, she noticed a profound shift, not just in her mindset but also in how her days unfolded. Meetings felt less stressful, her relationships improved, and even her health benefited.
Here’s another example from my own life. I have moved my career from being a database programmer more than 25 years ago to an ayurveda practitioner because I was inspired. As I started setting the intention to ‘serve with authenticity,’ I noticed it in my interactions with clients and students. The more I aligned with this intention, the deeper my connections became, and opportunities I hadn’t anticipated began to flow into my life. In time I have started running Yoga Nidra sessions that are about setting intentions and Sankalpa for the outcome we want to create and remove any obstacles while aligning our energies for the outcome.
These stories remind us that intentions, no matter how small, have the power to ripple through every area of our lives.
Intentions for Transformation
As we finish, let’s reflect on what we’ve discussed. Intentions are not just about achieving external goals; they’re about aligning with your true self. They are the bridge between where you are now and where you want to be.
Here’s a challenge for you: Set one intention today. It doesn’t have to be grand; something simple yet meaningful to you. Write it down, say it out loud, or even share it with others and us.
Remember, the power of intention lies in its consistency and clarity. Each day, you have the chance to plant a new seed and nurture it with your thoughts, words, and actions. The ultimate transformation is who you become through this practice.Dive deeper into your wellness journey and set your intentions with our Yoga Nidra Library.
